How to care for a bouclé wool cover

Bouclé wool is the most requested fabric on our cloud beds, and the most forgiving. As long as you do not do to it the things it cannot take.

The weekly habit

Vacuum the fabric once a week, with the brush head. Not the flat nozzle, which flattens the loops: the brush, which lifts them.

That is the only genuinely necessary upkeep. Everything else is occasional.

Washing the covers

The covers come off. Before putting them in the machine, close the zips: that is what damages the fabric when you forget.

Wash cold, 30 °C maximum, delicate cycle. Air dry. Never a tumble dryer: heat shrinks the fabric and the cover will not go back on. No bleach either.

Once dry, brush the surface gently to bring the loops back up. They settle within minutes.

A stain: right away

This is the only rule that really counts. A damp cloth and mild soap, immediately, deal with almost anything. The same stain, three days later, has moved into the fibre.

Blot, do not rub. Rubbing spreads the stain and breaks the loops.

Avoid abrasive cleaners and aggressive stain removers. On a bouclé fabric they leave a ring more visible than the original mark.

If your bed is velvet

Corduroy is vacuumed along the ribs, never across them.

Suede velvet does not want excess water. A soft dry brush, and for a stain, a barely damp cloth without soaking it. It is the softest fabric to the touch and the most sensitive to moisture.

Two expensive mistakes

Pulling the bed by the cover to move it. Lift it. The cover is not a handle, and the seams are not built to carry the weight of a foam block.

Leaving it in full sun for months. Every shade fades in direct light, dark ones faster than pale ones. If your bed faces a large south-facing window, a filtering curtain will buy it years.

And the foam?

It asks for nothing. The fabric is what lives, stains and catches the light; the foam does not move. That is the whole point of a removable cover: the part that wears is also the part you can take off.
