A floor bed for a child: from what age?

This is the question we get most about cloud beds for children. The honest answer: age matters less than the problem you are trying to solve.

What this bed actually is

A kids cloud bed takes a 90 × 190 cm mattress. It is not a cot and it is not a spare bed: it is a proper single bed, one a child sleeps in until their teens.

It takes 115 cm of width and 215 cm of length on the floor. The headboard stands 100 cm tall, the border 30 cm.

The usual moment is leaving the cot

Most children leave the cot between two and three and a half, often because they start climbing out of it. That is when the question really comes up.

At that age it is not the size of the bed that counts, it is what surrounds it. A two-and-a-half-year-old falls out of bed. The question becomes: from what height, and onto what.

What the construction changes, concretely

The sleeping surface is low, and the foam border is 30 cm high all the way round. A fall therefore happens from little height, and onto a soft edge rather than a wooden corner.

There is no metal leg, no hard corner and no sharp edge anywhere on the bed. That is what separates an all-foam bed from a padded headboard on a frame: on the second, fabric is covering wood.

One useful clarification: a soft border is not a bed rail. It cushions, it does not hold back. If your child moves a lot and you want real restraint, you need a rail, on this bed as on any other.

What to look at in the room

The floor. A rug beside the bed beats bare tiles, whichever bed you choose.

The space around it. Allow 60 cm of passage on the side the child gets out from. They will always use the same one, the one facing the door.

What is within reach. A low bed means a child who gets up alone, earlier and more often. Look at the room at their height, not yours.

And afterwards?

This is the strongest argument, and it is rarely made. A 90 × 190 cm mattress still works at fifteen. You are not buying a child's bed to be replaced in three years: you are buying their bed, with a cover that washes and can change colour when the room changes style.
