This is the question that stalls an order most often. And the answer does not really depend on the bed: it depends on your room.
The three sizes, and what they take on the floor
A cloud bed has no wooden frame and no legs: a foam border runs around the mattress. So it takes a little more room than the mattress alone. Here are the real figures.
| Mattress | Total width | Total length |
|---|---|---|
| 140 × 200 cm | 165 cm | 225 cm |
| 160 × 200 cm | 185 cm | 225 cm |
| 180 × 200 cm | 205 cm | 225 cm |
The headboard stands 100 cm tall, the border 30 cm.
The trap is the length
Everyone compares widths. But all three sizes are the same length: 225 cm. If your room is three metres deep, you will have 75 cm in front of the bed whichever size you pick.
So measure the length of your room before the width. That is what decides whether the bed fits.
The 60 centimetre rule
To move comfortably around a bed you need roughly 60 cm of clear passage on the sides you use. Below 50 cm you turn sideways. Below 40, you climb over.
The maths is simple. Room width, minus the total width of the bed, divided by the number of sides to clear.
A three metre room: at 165 cm, 135 cm are left to share, so 67 cm each side. Comfortable. At 205 cm, 95 cm are left, so 47 cm each side. It works, but it is tight.
A 3.5 metre room: the 205 cm leaves 72 cm each side. No issue at all.
If the bed sits against a wall you only have one side to clear, and everything gets easier.
And for two people?
At 140, each of you gets 70 cm. That is a small single per person: fine if you sleep close, tight if one of you moves.
At 160, it becomes 80 cm each. This is the balance point, the one most couples choose.
At 180, each has 90 cm, the equivalent of a single bed. You stop feeling each other. It is also the size that copes best with a child arriving in the middle of the night.
Three questions to decide
Is your room at least 3.4 m wide? Below that, the 180 will eat the room. A cloud bed is low, so visually light, but 205 cm is still 205 cm.
Do two of you sleep there every night? If so, do not go below 160. It is the most common regret.
Are you over 1.85 m tall? The mattress is 200 cm in all three sizes, so size changes nothing there. Only the width is up for discussion.
One last piece of advice, free
Tape the outline on the floor with masking tape, using the total dimensions and not the mattress ones. Live with it for two days. It tells you more than any plan.
And if you would rather see it for real, several models are on show at our depot near Brussels, by appointment. All three sizes exist with a round headboard and with a straight one.
